Wow, totally been neglecting the blog. I'm using Instagram and Tumblr to post a lot of my most recent work. You can follow me on Instagram @tomtraverspics and/or on Tumblr @tomtravers84.
Anyway, todays sketch was inspired by my thinking about how awesome Stan Winston's work is. I really miss the days when science fiction and fantasy films featured more hand-made artistry. There was something more believable and exciting about that for me. Computer generated imagery is cool and all. It works well as a suppliment to tangible, handcrafted props and costumes, but it seems the film industry relies on it to do all the heavy lifting these days. To me, a lot of todays CG characters and environments look like fast, cheap, shortcuts. I know little of what makes it onto the big screen is actually fast or cheap but that's just how it reads to me. I'll take hand-made movie monsters over slick, squishy, billowing computer generated abominations anyday.
Time is an illusion. Progress is an illusion. Just because CG is all the rage does not mean it is superior to the incredible work of the effects wizards or yore. I think a well balanced hybrid is the technique the film industry should embrace and strive for. Wanted to end my rant on a positive note there.
In other creative news, I am still plugging away on my baby, Battle Skull. It's a labor of love and taking quite some time. Fear not, it will be more than worth the wait.
Also, I just sent two of my designs off to be turned into wicked cool stickers. Stay tuned here and to my other social media outlets for information should you be interested in ordering a few.
Thanks for visiting!
