Awesome Art: Damion Scott

This is the first installment of a new feature on this blog called "Awesome Art". Inventive title, no? Haha, anyway...Once in a while I am struck by some particularly cool comic book art, illustration, animation, whatever. I thought it would be cool to feature that kind of inspiring stuff here on the blog as it pops up. I'll focus on new stuff, new and forthcoming releases in multiple media.

So, here are some pages from the recently published Web of Spiderman 129.1 and the forthcoming 129.2 by Damion Scott. I've been a fan of Damion's work for a while now. He did some great work on Batgirl, a few awesome issues of Spiderman in the past and his Solo book at DC was tremendous, among other things. Damion is a very unique comic book artist as you can see, he has his own voice. It's the kind of style that can be polarizing. Some people love it, some hate it. I love it.

When I saw these preview pages online it was such a breath of fresh air. I'd been feeling for a while that the art at Marvel was getting pretty stiff, formulaic and boring generally. Damion's pages are anything but. The energy here is off the charts. The characters are all super unique, the environments are simple but full of character, everything is dripping with style. There's also deep technical knowledge and skill in everything Damion does on these pages. His work is exaggerated and distorted in a way only a knowledgeable, high level draughtsman can pull off. This is the kind of art that got me excited about drawing and comics as a kid and continues to inspire me to this day.

I love seeing artists with a truly singular style/vision tackle mainstream established characters. Doing something fresh, exciting and new visually with characters that have been around forever is no easy task. Damion has certainly brought something memorable to the table here with these pages. The book is a fun read too! The tone of the story and Damion's style are a great fit. This combination of striking art and good story is what great comics are all about.

Anyway, enjoy some of the preview pages. Also, show support for awesome comic book creators and buy the actual books!!
