Draw what you see... The biggest mistake I made as a young artist was not drawing enough from direct observation and/or photographs. I always wanted to draw strictly from imagination. That was fun and I still love doing that. However, I would have a much better knowledge base to work with today had I taken my art teachers' advice and focused more on life drawing at an early age. I have since learned the error of my ways and have been drawing a lot more from direct observation and photos, trying to sharpen my skills and knowledge in hopes that it will make me a more well rounded draftsman and artist.

I bought a sketchbook about a month ago and promised myself that every drawing in the book would either be done from observing live subjects/environments directly or using photographic reference. The goal of these sketchbook drawings is not to necessarily create beautiful, pleasing drawings but to practice. To exercise, artistically speaking.

Above and below are some of the drawings I feel are worth (just barely) showing. I hope you enjoy them. I intend to continue to fill many, many more sketchbooks with observational drawings. It's a lot of fun and I believe it has already sharpened my drawing abilities.
