New York Comic Con 2007 report! NYCC 2007 was fantastic! My brother, my buddy Jon Wood, and I exhibited as Bontebok Design and debuted our first full-length original comic as well as a sketchbook and an original t-shirt. Things went far better than expected. We had a solid amount of people taking an interest in our work and a good amount of them willing to take a chance and put down a few dollars to get a copy of the comic, sketchbook, and/or the t-shirt. We got rid of most of the comics we had printed, though our print run was super small at only 75 copies, still we sold enough that I consider it a success for a few guys coming from nowhere, pushing an original book with no press or hype, located at a tiny booth in the small press area of the show.

It was such a pleasure to watch people respond to the work and take an interest in it. It was also a kick to sketch for people, sign books, and even have a few photos snapped of us with some people who bought the book, a dream come true really. I am so thankful to all those who dropped by the booth and checked us out, a special thanks to those who bought the books, the shirt, or both!

The only hitch in the entire weekend was on the very first day when I came to our booth space to find no table and chairs! We had to pay extra at the show to get them, something I thought I had done already, so it was a shock and a very expensive one. Other than this, the show was amazing. Our time was spent talking to visitors about our work and theirs', their interests, our interests, what they were doing at the show, it was great talking to people and showing our work. It was also great to be there as a fan. There was an amazing selection of comics and art books at fantastic prices, also a ton of cool toys, statues, original art and all that great geek stuff to look at! There was a great guest list including some of my favorite artists like Andrew Robinson and Tommy Lee Edwards among many, many more.

I can't wait to get Bontebok Comics #2 underway and do this all again next year. Perhaps we'll do some smaller cons before then too since this went so well.

Comics, sketchbooks, and t-shirts are available to anyone interested, real cheap, you get a lot for your buck. You can get the comic package which includes the signed comic, separate sketchbook, and an original personalized drawing for $3 plus $1 shipping. Then there is the Bontebok Bundle, which includes the comic, sketchbook, sketch, plus our very cool original t-shirt. I'll get a picture of the shirt up soon, as well as preview pages from the book.

Below are a few sketches I did in my sketchbook during some of the more idle time at the show, these are not examples of sketches done for fans, those were done in silver shapie on the black backs of the comics, which looked very cool! These are just random sketches I thought I would share so this post wasn't super-boring.

So, a zombie and three guys in jackets...

Thanks again to everyone who came by the booth at Comic Con and took a little time to check us out!
As always, thanks for dropping by the blog, enjoy the words and scribbles!

Sweet! Sounded awesome man, that is really cool your comic sold a ton too. You gotta do it again next year and you'll get even more people to check your stuff out. Nice zombie by the way, I really like the mouth. I think it put a new look on zombie-types.

Hey, Simon. Thanks for stopping by. Mignola is the man, I can't deny I think about his work once in a while when I am drawing, especially when drawing zombies or anything macabre!
