CARTER GOODRICH! ( to be clear the images in this post are not my work, oh how I wish they were, but no. as if I had to say it...) I felt inspired to do a post on illustrator/animation designer Carter Goodrich, so here it is! Mr. Goodrich is famous for his illustration work which includes some memorable "New Yorker" magazine covers which you can find at the New Yorker site, I believe. He has also illustrated a few children's books such as editions of "The Nutcracker", "A Christmas Carol", and most recently "A Creature Was Stirring". He's done a good deal of character design work in animation for films such as "Finding Nemo" and "Open Season", to name a few.

I love Goodrich's amazing use of shapes in his drawing. He always seems to come up with unique, interesting ways of representing characters. Combine this drawing ability with a brilliant sense of color and composition and you have one world class artist. Goodrich's work is elegant, full of life, and truly unique.

Below are some samples of Mr. Goodrich's work scanned from books I own. I suggest getting the versions of "A Christmas Carol" and "The Nutcracker" that he has illustrated, not only because they are wonderful works of art, but because they are dirt cheap on the net! Half.com, check it out, well worth it. If you've got a little more cash in your art book fund, and you're a big Carter GBoodrich fan, get "The Art of Open Season", filled with his character designs, it's great.

I'm sorry for carrying on, have a look below and get to the good stuff!!!

Above 3 images: Character design work featured in "The Art of Open Season"
This final image is from the back cover of Carter's latest children's book "A Creature Was Stirring". The art in this book is out of this world, buy it.

I realize I didn't exactly heap on the artwork here, I had trouble uploading a few of my scans, I may do another post tomorrow with some more Goodrich material.

Thanks for stopping by, I hope you enjoy the art!

tom, i found you searching for carter goodrich. with your knowledge of him, do you know what issue (year and month) of playboy one of his illustrations appeared? also, do you know how permission to use it in a book i am writing, can be obtained from him? the drawing is in color, has 2 gangsters in the middle, wearing white shirts, one with a gun in shoulder holster, other with beer can in hand, and they are surrounded by several rubenesque women in their undies? thanks, davethejetjockey@netzero.net
